Cessnock jockey Robert Thompson is hoping for a big swing in luck this weekendwhen he tries to qualify another David Atkins-trained runner for the Provincial Championship final at Newcastle.
Thompson will ride All From Scrap in the fifth and final $150,000 heatfor the $500,000 decider at Randwick on April 14.
All From Scrap was eighth but finishing stronglyin the Gosford qualifier (1200m) two weeks ago with Thompson,’s winningestjockey, aboard. He had earlier qualified Plaisir for the final for Atkins with a second in the Hawkesbury heat.
Thompson, though, was ruing his luck at the draw again with All From Scrap.
“He drew 17 at Gosford and he’s drawn 17 again,” Thompson said. “Back on the bigger track, his home track, it will suit him much more, and the 1400 is much better, but I’ll need a hell of a lot of luck from that barrier.”
He was also out of luck for Sunday’s wildcard Country Championship qualifier (1280m) at Muswellbrook with My Tagoson for Scone trainer Rod Northam.
Like All From Scrap, My Tagoson was a fast-finishing eighth for Thompson in his earlier crack at theseries and he drew poorly, in 15, for his final chance.
“He’s back in distance from 1400 to 1280 and that’s a big worry, but Rod said he’s donewell and he’s put blinkers on him to try tosharpen him up,” Thompson said.
“He’ll be a long way back and he’ll need a hell of a lot of luck too.”
Thompson was third in thePort Macquarie country qualifier withPortatorio, which was set to gain a start in the final after an injury to Jenny Graham-trained stablemareAwesome Pluck. However, it too has since withdrawn from the series because of injury.
