Exciting news for former Knight Alex McKinnon and his wife Teigan TweetFacebookFormer Newcastle Knights player Alex McKinnon and his wife Teigan have some exciting baby news.
The couple, who were married in the Hunter Valley in October last year, have announced they are expecting their first child together.
McKinnon announced the pregnancy on his official Instagram page, posting a photo of the clearly delighted pair holding a framed ultrasound image of a baby with the words “Baby McKinnon coming soon”.
The couple married on October 8 last year when, in an especially memorable moment for family and friends,McKinnon fulfilled his promise to rise from his wheelchair on their wedding day.
McKinnon was just22 and playing for Newcastle in 2014 when his promising national rugby league career was cut short after he suffered a devastating spinal cord injury following an illegaltackle by thenMelbourne Storm Jordan McLean, leaving him paralysed.
He spent six months in Sydney undergoing rehabilitation and five months on the Gold Coast.
He worked for about a year in a junior-recruitmentrole for the Knights, before leaving the club in March last year to undertake a TAFE course inleadership and management and forge a new career as a motivational speaker.
When McKinnon proposed to Teigan Power in April 2014, days after the devastating tackle that left him a quadriplegic, he set himself a goal of walking with her back down the aisle after their October wedding.
“Over the last three years I’ve done as much as I can and I’ll continue to work hard – Teigan knows how hard I work in regards to my rehab,” he said in July last year.
“At the moment walking down the aisle is physically not possible but essentially I’d love to be standing there down the aisle. Withthe effort she’s seen me put into the rehab I’m sure she’d be more than happy with that.”
He fulfilled that promise to rise to his feet at the couple’s wedding last October.
